Our Story

Chef Terrill Brazelton

Born in Selma, Alabama, in 1972 and raised in Southern California, Chef Terrill Brazelton’s life has revolved around food.

From early on his family’s love of great food and wine has helped shape his outlook and approach to food. Growing up at his grandmother’s apron strings when visiting Gulfport, MS, and Auburn, AL instilled the importance of letting fresh food speak for itself.

Living in Southern California for over a decade provided him a wide range of culinary experiences that helped further shape his view of local ingredients and how to appreciate them.

After returning to the South to finish high school, Terrill was brought back to his culinary roots. While in college at Auburn University he worked at several popular local restaurants, including a well-known pizzeria that ultimately launched his love affair with pizza.

He met his wife, Ashley, in 2002 and after the tragic passing of one of his best friends, Robert Hawkins, the opportunity became available for him to take over the Open Door Cafe (ODC) in Crestline Park.

Together he and his wife ran this little neighborhood gem and this cemented their love and passion for the restaurant business. The ODC was known for its eclectic vibe, warm and cozy atmosphere, and great musical acts including the great jazz musician, Cleveland Eaton.

They had both of their kids, Carter and Asher, during this time. In 2011, Terrill was again brought back to his love for pizza and was able to bring his fine dining experiences to create what he called “chef-inspired pizza”. He received national and local acclaim for his creations and was featured in countless articles, videos and monthly local news cooking segments.

He was picked to be on the Food Network show, Guy’s Grocery Games and won Birmingham’s Best Pizza for 6 years in a row. He was also voted 3rd best chef in Birmingham, behind Frank Stitt and Chris Hastings in 2017.

Terrill is committed to locally sourced foods and supporting local farmers. He hopes you will join him and his family for this new chapter in his culinary adventure and Troup’s Pizza becomes your new favorite neighborhood spot.

Fresh, delicious and unpretentious pizza, sandwiches and salads the whole family will enjoy right in your backyard.

They are excited to be able to open in Vestavia, the place their kids have grown up, and look forward to being a big supporter of Cahaba Heights and Vestavia Hills communities.
